Zack Final Board

Overall I feel that this semester went pretty well. The reviewers had some good advice on how to continue in the future and I learned a lot from my exploration this semester. The link above is to my final board and unfortunately the power point that goes with it is too big to upload.

Site plan

I finished the site plan and created it in 3d. I added trees to the 3d site to get a better idea of the feeling of the space. I also experimented with rendering and came up with a rendering out of flamingo that I like.

Updated building

I built the existing winery and adjacent building in rhino to give me a better idea of the site. I changed the roof structure of my building and added sails to the front of the existing winery. I also fixed the position of the sails and columns so that the sails no longer pass through the columns.

Tasting Room and Crush/Overlook

I changed the location of the tasting room slightly and added and overlook/crush space right on the edge of the cliff. I feel that this is a better arrangement to allow the best views from the cliff. I also used  a curve as the basis for the building and built up from there rather than deforming an existing shape. I think that this is a better approach and gives me more opportunities to design the shape. The shape still changes as it moves around the site. I used sails to clad the tasting pavilion and applied wind to them. As I change the direction of the wind the sails move in response.

Tasting on Site

I used the surrounding trees, cliff, and winery to change the  shape of the object. The winery and picnic area pull on the shape while the trees and cliff push against it. The resulting shape is formed based off these inputs. As with the earlier tests the location changes the shapes as well. As it gets moved around it changes in response to the change in forces applied on it. I also experiment with a cladding system and used triangular panels to cover the shape. I hope to use what I learned in kangaroo to make these panels act like sails.

Site

I chose to stay with the existing site of the Flying Dutchman winery. I want to create an tasting room / pavilion that will respond not only to the trees around it but also to the winery. This site is located on the coast and has terrific view off the cliffs to the ocean. I want to use these things to my advantage when creating the tasting room.

Sail Wall Test

In this test I used a wall of sails to see how they would react compared to the independent sails of the first test. I like the first test better. It is easier to see the changes in the independent test vs this one.

Kangaroo Sail Test

I started experimenting with a plug-in for grasshopper called kangaroo. Kangaroo is a physics engine that can represent actual forces that would be applied to an object. In this test I was working with a directional force on an object. I used this to simulate wind and how it would affect a sail. I also used a spring component which allows deformation to a certian extent. As the wind pushes on the object if deforms but not farther than the material allows.

Proximity Test 2

I tried a different approach this time and used the shapes to deform an existing geometry. The size and distance of the shapes both have an impact on how the geometry is reformed. The bigger the shape the more pressure it puts on the geometry and the more it gets deformed. As with the first test when the geometry is moved it changes its shape in response to its new position among the shapes.

Proximity test

I am working in grasshopper to try and create a shape based off forces by surrounding objects. I used these forces to affect the shape of the curve being extruded. As the curve moves through the shapes it changes in response to its new location.
